Got Wood?

Once again Dan Scully's Tree Services is offering quality seasoned firewood at reasonable prices.
El Nino? El Schmino! The last couple winters have not had much rain, but it still gets cold during the winter nights in Los Angeles. When the weather is nippy there is nothing like lighting a fire in the fireplace to warm the home and chase away the chill. There is something elemental about the smoky aroma of a wood fire, the crackling sounds, the dancing flames and the glowing embers.
Our firewood was split prior to June 1, 2016 to allow a full summer of seasoning. We use only quality pine and hardwoods. Not all the wood we cut meets our standards for firewood. Our customers only get the best.
Oak costs more, but many customers prefer burning hardwood. Oak produces a slow-burning fire. Oak takes patience to start, but the result is a sustained fire.
Our mixed woods contain about 50% pine and 50% hardwood. Some feel that besides being economical, using a mixture of hardwood and softwood works because the softwoods ignite more quickly and then the hardwood burns longer after the fire is established.
We deliver cords and half cords of seasoned firewood to customers throughout the Crescenta Valley. Our clients live in Glendale, Montrose, La Cañada, Flintridge, La Crescenta, Tujunga, Sunland, Shadow Hills, Lakeview Terrace and the surrounding areas. Order early to get the best selection.
Our prices for delivered wood are:
$200 - half cord all oak hardwood
$360 - full cord all oak hardwood
$150 - half cord 50/50 pine/oak mix
$260 - full cord 50/50 pine/oak mix
All pricing includes delivery. Stacking is additional. Our current stacking prices start at $20 for a half cord if the stack is within 20 feet of where the pick-up truck is parked and 50 cents per step over 20 feet. For a full cord, the price is doubled.
Firewood should be stored in a well-ventilated outdoor area and protected from the elements.
Small amounts of our firewood for camping, firepits, etc. can now be purchased at Verdugo Hills Golf Shop for $1 each. If you have purchased our wood at the golf course before, you will note that this price is unchanged.

Holiday Firewood

Men at Work - Tree Trimming

Emergency Tree Service
One of our regular clients had us out to give a quote for tree trimming. That night, there was a windstorm, and in the morning, the coral tree had split. We got the call to come out immediately.
When we arrived, we found a large portion of the coral tree split. It was supported by the power lines leading to the house and by the picket fence. Our team carefully put supports under the tree and then trimmed the foliage around the power lines. Then we removed the damaged section of the tree. Then we trimmed all of the clients other trees and cleaned up the area.
No one can know when they will need emergency help. We hope you will never need to call us for something like this, but just in case, keep our number handy.

Tree Failure - Nature or Negligence?
The natural act of a tree is to grow up and then fall down. The sometimes $3500 question, more or less, is when is a tree going to fall, and where will it most likely land?
If all the trees in your environment appear happy, healthy and proper - with no possible threat to your safety, home, or property - then perhaps you should neglect the when and where tree failure question and look for something else in the world to worry about.
However, he safety and health of tall and leaning trees of your own, or your neighbors, can best be monitored by you yourself who have the opportunity to observe and inspect routinely.
Here are a few things you want to watch for to detect root rot: mushroom or fungus growth at or around the base of the trees. Clear vegetation and leaves from this area and keep it dry from sprinklers. Also, sparse leaf or needle growth, and yellowish color instead of dark natural color (Yellow needled pines most likely are the late stages of a deadly beetle infestation. Around March 1st is the optimum time for spraying pines and cedars to kill beetles.)
For leaning trees, try to mark the angle of its lean and record the rate of any increase in angle. This can easily be done by standing behind a fence post or porch support post and draw a straight line using a business or credit card at the same angle of the trees trunk pitch beyond. Date your mark.
Sometimes you will think a leaning tree is leaning more than it did before, but aren't sure. Look high and look low. High if there are straighter more dominant trees. You will see open sky where the trees used to touch. Down at the base, inspect behind the lean for root ball lifting or cracks in the dirt. You can also stomp your feet in this area for a muffled drum sound if there are not too many leaves.
These routines should be practiced on all large trees of concern after every Santa Ana high wind storm.
If a leaning tree's root ball is not longer tight in the ground due to the rocking of high winds, the tree might be saved by topping or heavier than normal reduction trimming. But if a tree has root rot, delaying its removal is not a good idea, especially in the rainy season.
If you identify a dangerous or threatening tree belonging to your neighbor or city, and inform them by certified mail of such, then the rule of "responsible cogency" applies and the act of nature rule no longer relieves the owner of their responsibility to prevent their tree from damaging your property.
However if one mails such a letter, one should be prepared to see that tree removed. If that is your intention and no action is taken, you may want to try sending a copy of the letter to the insurance carrier.
